News: Man accused of killing pedestrian in Hernando County, trying to hide body

SPRING HILL, FL – Police arrested a driver on multiple charges connected with the death of a pedestrian in Hernando County, according to ABC Action News.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 28-year-old Joseph Strickland of Weeki Wachee struck and killed the pedestrian in the area of Cortez Boulevard and Steuben Street at about 12:10 a.m. Sunday, then tried to hide the victim’s remains in the back of a bait shop in Spring Hill.

The FHP said Strickland told friends his Mazda MX-6 had become disabled and damaged as the result of hitting a deer. But upon further inspection of the vehicle, Strickland’s roommate concluded the damage was not from hitting a deer and contacted law enforcement authorities.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and Hernando County deputies subsequently discovered the victim’s remains behind the bait shop on Evanston Street. Authorities said Strickland tried to flee when troopers confronted him at his home, but was quickly apprehended.

Among the charges Strickland faces are leaving the scene of a crash involving death and tampering with evidence. The victim of the crash was identified as a 32-year-old resident of Spring Hill.
