News: Pedestrian fatally struck by deputy during Largo chase

LARGO, FL – An investigation is underway after a pedestrian was struck and killed during a chase by a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office deputy last week.

The Tampa Bay Times reported the pursuit was occurring Wednesday night in the area of U.S. 19 and Ulmerton Road.

The deputy, 29-year-old Alexander Edge, was chasing a group of car theft suspects at about 9 p.m. Edge was driving a marked Chevrolet Tahoe on Ulmerton Road when another deputy alerted him that the suspects were heading for an area behind him. Investigators said Edge put his SUV in reverse with the emergency lights on.  His rear bumper struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road behind him, identified as 59-year-old Barry Fick.

Deputies said Edge did not see Fick, who was not in a crosswalk. The sheriff’s office added that Fick walked behind the Tahoe before he could be detected by the backup camera or backup alert.

Fick died Thursday at Bayfront Health. The incident is now under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office’s Major Accident Investigation Team.
