News: Man facing charges in crash that killed Hillsborough County deputy

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL – A man is facing charges in connection with the crash that killed a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputy, according to WTSP.

This is an update to a previous story.

Corporal Brian LaVigne, a 30-year-veteran of the force, died on Monday after his cruiser was struck by a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Travis Zachary Gabrial Garrett.  Authorities said Garrett was fleeing from deputies at the time and intentionally hit LaVigne’s car while driving at a high rate of speed on Lumsden Road in Brandon.

LaVigne was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Garrett is now facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, DUI manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter.

LaVigne had one more shift to work before he was scheduled to retire.
