News: Fort Meade firefighter hospitalized after being hit by train

FORT MEADE, Fla. — A firefighter was struck and injured by a train while fighting a blaze in Polk County on Tuesday afternoon, reports WTSP.

The incident happened as firefighters were battling a grass fire in the area of 14th Street NW near Highway 17 North at about 12:45 p.m. One of them, a Fort Meade volunteer firefighter, was running over to shut a door on an emergency truck when he was hit by a CSX train that was approaching at the same time.

The firefighter sustained a broken leg and was rushed to an area hospital for treatment.

The incident is under investigation by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
