News: Passenger killed, teenage driver injured in SUV crash on U.S. 98 in Polk County
FROSTPROOF, FL – Authorities said an SUV crash in Polk County Tuesday left a passenger dead and a 17-year-old driver injured.
According to The Ledger, the teen was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee east on U.S. 98 West near Old Stokes Road near the town of Frostproof just before 2:30 pm. He told investigators he swerved to avoid hitting a large bird and drove off the roadway. The SUV hit a culvert, went into the air and then flipped after coming down.
A passenger, 45-year-old Mary Ruiz of Sebring, was pronounced dead after being transported to Lakeland Regional Health. She was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the sheriff’s office said. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was injured and taken to AdventHealth Sebring.
The crash remains under investigation.
