News: Multi-vehicle accident shuts down Gandy Bridge to traffic

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – An accident involving multiple vehicles, including a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser, shut down the Gandy Bridge Sunday afternoon.

According to Patch in Tampa, a 49-year-old woman was driving on the bridge at about 12:10 p.m. when she looked down at her GPS and did not see the FHP car on the bridge that was stopped behind a disabled vehicle. The woman hit the unmarked patrol car, which then crashed into the rear of the disabled car. The FHP car also slammed into a trailer that was being towed by an SUV.

No serious injuries were reported in the incident, but all westbound lanes on the Gandy Bridge were closed.

Drivers were advised to seek alternate routes, including the Courtney Campbell Causeway and the Howard Frankland Bridge.

Accidents like this one that result from distracted driving are increasingly a cause for concern, and in 2018, 234 accidents in Florida resulted in fatalities attributed to driver distraction.
